As a student at Kenyon, you're a part of a community much greater than the College. You're a valuable part of Gambier, the Knox County community, and our greater world. Connecting to your community through volunteer work can make a huge impact on you and your world.
We believe that some of the elements of a Liberal Arts education are civility and citizenship, and we can achieve these through community service programs.
The Community Programs Office in collaboration with the Center for Community Engagement is committed to empowering students to become contributing citizens in whatever community they find themselves. By participating in community service programs, students become more civically minded by:
The Community Programs Office partners with many community organizations throughout Knox County community. Our philosophy is that service is reciprocal and therefore it is necessary to work in collaboration with our community partners to develop strategies and programs to meet identified community needs.
Throughout the academic year, the Community Programs Office plans service programs through which students, faculty and staff can participate. By partnering with your organization, not only are we able to support your mission, but you are helping college students to foster future leadership skills that include citizenship, compassion and caring for the community.
All partners must have at least one organization representative on site during the service project to provide direction to the Kenyon participants. We also ask that the representative helps the group understand the importance of their work by providing information about the organization and how the task the group is performing is of benefit. And, of course, please plan plenty of work for the group. Our partners are sometimes surprised by how much a group of energetic college students can accomplish in a few hours!
There are four events each semester (one per month) on various times and days. If your organization would like to host Kenyon students, faculty, and staff, please click on the "Service Days" event on the left and click on the the date you would like to host. In the form that comes up please, describe your project and let us know how many participants you can host. Please note that in order to give participants an opportunity to experience many different issues throughout the year, partners may not sign-up for two months in a row, but may be on a wait list.
