The president is responsible for helping each committee to reach its full potential by organizing collaborations, proposing ideas and relaying information to upper level administrators. The president leads weekly Student Council meetings and creates proposals to ensure the progression of Student Council.
The vice president of academic affairs is responsible for the placement of student representatives, chairing the Academic Affairs Committee and reporting developments to Student Council and the Campus Senate. The Academic Affairs Committee provides two student representatives for three separate faculty bodies that pertain to academic life at Kenyon: the Committee for Academic Standards, the Curricular Policy Committee and the Academic Infractions Board. The committee supports the representatives in decision-making and provides feedback for the faculty committees.
The vice president of student life is a member of Student Council’s executive committee and oversees the Student Life Committee (SLC), which approves and assists student organizations. The SLC monitors student groups on campus to ensure that groups are providing services to their members and to the wider Kenyon community. The student life committee also oversees all elections. The chair of the committee serves on both student council and campus senate to represent the interests of student groups.
The director of communications manages the social media presence of Student Council, serves as a liaison for the president and records meeting minutes that are then shared with the student body, faculty and staff of the College.
The student treasurers represent the Budget and Finance Committee, which is responsible for allocating student activity fee money to student organizations recognized by Student Council and the Campus Senate. The committee allocates the majority of funds to approved groups at the end of each semester and distributes the rest throughout the semester at supplemental hearings every two weeks.
This position represents the interests of the Council for Diversity and Social Justice. As the President of the CDSJ, they speak on behalf of the council's thirteen multicultural and diversity-oriented student groups (e.g., Unity House, South Asian Society, African Students Association, Adelante, etc.) to bring a uniquely diverse and necessary perspective to the projects and topics discussed in Student Council. Overall, the CDSJ exists to promote collaboration, support and coordination between its constituents. It also seeks to foster diversity, social awareness, equity and intellectually productive dialogue on campus.
This position is the liaison between Student Council and Kenyon's Greek Council.
The chair's most vital responsibility is their role as mediator between the student body and the administration on issues pertaining to the buildings and grounds of Kenyon. They assemble a team of students to keep a watchful eye and note anything awry; stay abreast of news from the Chief Business Officer and the Grounds Manager; and develop a relationship with the maintenance team and other Kenyon staff members.
The Housing and Dining Committee discusses and makes decisions on housing and dining issues at Kenyon. The committee works closely with the Office of Residential Life and AVI Dining Services to address concerns raised by students and to better the residential and dining experiences at Kenyon.
The safety chair is the liaison between Student Council and Campus Safety.
The sustainability chair is the liaison for the Sustainability Committee, a volunteer committee of students, faculty and staff pursuing environmental initiatives and events at Kenyon with help and support from other green groups on campus. The sustainability chair also reaches out to environmental groups on campus and works to improve green infrastructure at Kenyon.
The senior class president chairs the Senior Class Committee, overseeing fundraising, event programming (including Soiree, Fandango, & Senior Week) and fund allocations of the Class of 2016 account; represents the interests of the Senior Class as a voting member in Student Council and works with members of the College's senior staff on senior class initiatives; and sits on the First Year Experience working committee.
The junior class president works with a council of juniors to fund-raise for senior year and build up class camaraderie. They also express the concerns of the junior class at Student Council meetings.
