Intensive Introductory Modern Japanese
JAPN 111Y-112Y is a year course that constitutes the first two sequences of the five-semeser Japanese program. JAPN 111Y is offered in the fall. This course will introduce basic Modern Standard Japanese (i.e., the language used in visual and print media in contemporary Japan). This course requires language skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing) and knowledge of the cultural norms of everyday behavior (e.g., do's and dont's). Various media (e.g., videos,Internet) will be employed to develop those skills and knowledge. Students will also learn three types of Japanese orthography: hiragana, katakana, and approximately 250 kanji (Chinese characters). Class meetings range from nine hours per week in the first semester to eight hours per week in the second, with a fifty-minute evening session each day of class. Offered every year.
