We are so pleased that you will be joining us for the inauguration of Sean M. Decatur as the nineteenth president of Kenyon College. We look forward to welcoming you as an official inaugural delegate on behalf of your institution. I write to go over a few details regarding your activities leading up to the inaugural ceremony at 12:00 pm on Saturday, October 26.
It is customary for institutions to supply the regalia on loan for an inauguration As soon as possible you should request a robe, cap, and hood from the institution you are representing. Of course, you are free to wear your own if you prefer.
The installation ceremony will take place in the Toan Track of the Kenyon Athletic Center (please see attached map). If this is your first trip to Gambier you can find directions to the college and campus maps at http://www.kenyon.edu/visit-kenyon/getting-to-campus/. Reserved parking for delegates will be located in the lot immediately adjacent to the Center. Look for the signs to direct you. Delegates may sign in at the Delegate Registration table on the morning of Saturday, October 26, in the athletic center beginning at 8:30 am. If you plan to arrive the evening before the inauguration, you are welcome to check in early at a temporary registration table that will be located in the Kenyon College Bookstore between 5:00 and 7:00 pm. on Friday evening only.
On inauguration morning, greeters will be at the doors of the athletic center to direct you to the designated delegate area. We will provide a secure space for you to leave your belongings, put on your regalia for the ceremony, and line up for the procession. A continental breakfast will be provided at this site from 9:30 until 11:00 am. In addition, if you arrive early enough, you may wish to attend the two symposia events in the Kahler Theater in the Kenyon Athletic Center that will be presented that morning (please see the schedule of events at www.kenyon.edu/inauguration).
We will begin to robe and line up at 11:00 am. Marshals and student ambassadors will be there to assist you and to direct you to your place in line. Delegates will line up in the order of the year in which each institution was founded. When you sign in at the registration table, you will receive a folder with a number that corresponds to your order in the procession to facilitate the line-up.
After the ceremony, you are cordially invited to a special luncheon for delegates and special guests in the Great Hall of Peirce Hall. Shuttles will be waiting outside of the athletic center to take you up the hill. Please, unless you have mobility issues, do not take your car up the hill as parking will be extremely limited. Shuttles will again be available following the luncheon to bring you back to your car.
